Chapter Fifteen:

Perversion

“What is a friend? A single soul inhabiting two bodies.” Aristotle

“You’re back!” Ella wrapped Eleonore in a giddy embrace when she had returned to the barracks. “I have so much to tell you.”

“As do I,” Eleonore broke off, still uncomfortable with such familiarity.

“Come, come,” Ella grabbed Eleonore’s hand and led her back to their bunk. “On second thought, let’s talk outside,” she grabbed Eleonore’s shoulders and spun her towards the door with a glance at the watchful eyes.

Leading Eleonor back outside the barracks, Ella stopped when they were a few yards away and crossed her arms as she leaned in, “the resistance is growing, and we have a plan.”

“Really?” Eleonore mirrored her, enjoying the intrigue.

“Yes,” Ella nodded excitedly. “Soon we will all be free.”

“How?” Eleonore shook her head.

“Well,” Ella checked over her shoulder, “I’ve been re-assigned. Thanks to some clever bribery, I ‘m now ‘employed’ manufacturing weapons in the armory.”

“I don’t understand how constructing bombs for the Nazis helps the resistance?” Eleonore was thoroughly confused.

“Slight defects here and there which go unnoticed to the untrained eye,” Ella winked.

“Genius,” Eleonore nodded.

“But that’s not the main purpose,” Ella lowered her voice even further. “I’ve been sneaking small portions of dynamite. The men are going to construct some rudimentary explosives to destroy the crematoriums.”

“That’s ambitious,” Eleonore threw her eyebrows up, enthralled but wary.

“What’s wrong?” Ella stood back, catching Eleonore’s lack of enthusiasm.

“Nothing,” Eleonore shook her head, but knew she had failed to keep Ella off the trail.

“Tell me,” Ella tilted her head.

“Even if the plan works,” Eleonore sighed, “what then?”

“What do you mean?”

“What happens when the explosives go off and the buildings crumble? That won’t stop them.”

“It’s a rather elaborate plan,” Ella defended, “and I’ve only imparted the highlights to you.”

“I didn’t mean to offend,” Eleonore raised her hand. “I’m just concerned is all.”

“I know,” Ella relaxed, “but even if we can destroy the production of death and bide some time for the Allies, wouldn’t that be enough?”

“I hate not knowing what’s happening out in the world,” Eleonore crossed her arms as she shivered. “Even at the Villa there’s no gossip to pick up on.”

“Oh, yes,” Ella’s eyes lit up, “tell me all about the Villa.”

“Well,” Eleonore paused as she pondered what would be worth telling. She certainly was not going to indulge on how well she was fed, not to someone as hungry as she had been. “The Commandant’s family live quite comfortably, enjoying the fruits of plunder. They are a happy bunch, and I doubt anyone besides Commandant Hoess knows what the real business of Auschwitz entails.”

“Did you see him?” Ella peered at Eleonore who was beginning to wonder if their friendship went any deeper than Ella’s ambitions.

“Hoess?”

“Who else?” Ella shrugged.

“Yes,” Eleonore nodded cautiously, curious as to what request was going to follow.

“Excellent,” Ella’s eyes bounced as her mind ran wild with scheming. “We can use that.”

“You mean you can use me,” Eleonore grew impatient.

“Don’t be petty,” Ella lowered her gaze. “This goes beyond either of us. There’s no room for sentiment.
